Try This: ® Best Practices in Nursing Care to Older Adults Series

The goal of the Try This: Series of Asssessment tools is to provide knowledge of best practices in care of older adults that is:

  • easily accessible
  • easily understood
  • easily implemented, and
  • to encourage the use of these best practices by all direct care nurses

The content is directed to orient and encourage all nurses to understand the special needs of older adults and utilize the highest standards of practice in caring for the elderly.

Each Try This issue is a 2-page document with a description of why the topic is important when caring for older patients on the first page, and an assessment tool that can be administered in 20 minutes or less on the second page. The series is accessible here online and also as hard copy.  Try This  instruments are designed to be used as screening tools, not for diagnosis.

As the percentage of older adults in the population continues to increase dramatically, the demand for high-quality geriatric nursing care must be met. In recognizing this need, the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) has worked collaboratively with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and other organizations to develop competencies and curricular guidelines. These standards help to ensure that nursing students and nurses employed within hospital systems will be able to provide valuable and essential geriatric care for the nation’s aging population.

Video Series

The HIGN has developed video resources addressing Interprofessional team building and also around the Try This: ® Series.  In addition this section includes the GNEC videos developed in collaboration with the UNCW School of Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
